Boulder bicyclist dies after Tahoe hit-and-run

Associated Press

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A 23-year-old Colorado man has died from injuries he suffered when he was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle at Lake Tahoe in a hit-and-run accident on Highway 28 near Carnelian Bay.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Pete Mann told the Sierra Sun James Hulett of Boulder died at a Reno hospital Thursday after suffering major head trauma last Friday.

Placer County sheriff’s spokeswoman Dena Erin says 53-year-old Vincent Araujo of Kings Beach, Calif., has been charged with felony hit and run. Additional charges are possible.

Araujo surrendered to deputies about two hours after he allegedly drifted onto the highway shoulder and struck Hulett from behind.

Erin says Araujo is on a “no bail hold” at the jail in Auburn while U.S. immigration officials investigate his citizenship.
