BREAKING: Fatal accident closes Swan Mountain Road

A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a garbage truck on Swan Mountain Road near Colorado Highway 6 in Dillon at around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman confirmed.

The motorcyclist was transported to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver and another passenger inside the truck, operated by Waste Management, were voluntarily transported to the hospital as well but did not appear to have serious injuries, the spokesman said.

A vehicular crimes unit from Rifle was en route as of 9:35 p.m., the spokesman said, although he indicated this was standard procedure in fatality crashes and he could not say whether or not any crimes were believed to have been committed.

Officials announced a closure of Swan Mountain Road at 5:51 p.m. via SC Alert. At around 9 p.m., another alert was issued noting that the closure would remain in place from Lowry Campground to Snake River Inlet for at least another three hours.
