Breck-area snowmobile accident kills Texas man

BRECKENRIDGE – A San Antonio, Texas man died after striking a tree while snowmobiling on the Brewery Trail in French Creek Saturday morning, authorities said.

According to Summit County coroner Joanne Richardson, 49-year-old Richard Catanzaro and his 50-year-old wife, Karen, were riding together on a snowmobile when they rounded a turn, lost control of the sled and struck a tree. Neither was wearing a helmet.

Search and rescue teams were summoned to the end of the trail around 11:30 a.m. and were joined by the coroner at 1:20 p.m.

Karen Catanzaro was transported via Flight for Life to St. Anthony’s Central with serious orthopedic injuries.

The couple’s two college-aged children were also on the snowmobile tour, but did not witness the incident. An autopsy on Richard Catanzaro is scheduled for today.

Catanzaro’s death comes less than a week after a snowmobiler was caught and killed in an avalanche on the north face of Mount Guyot where he was highmarking the steep slope. Two others traveling with him were able to avoid the massive slide.

That man’s death was the first avalanche-related fatality of the season in Colorado. Usually by this time in the year, Colorado has had five of its average of six avalanche-related deaths.
