Breck cops to dish up meals for Special Olympics

BRECKENRIDGE – Police officers are used to serving citizens with tickets, but this weekend a handful of Breckenridge cops will ditch their pens and dish up food instead.Eight Breckenridge police officers will don aprons Saturday night to take orders, fill water glasses and bring out food to customers at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.Their efforts, known as Tip-A-Cop, will trickle into the hands of Special Olympics Colorado. The Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities, according to its website.”Tip-A-Cops are really the biggest fundraiser that law enforcement does for us,” said Kasey Bumgarner, with Special Olympics Colorado. That’s aside from the annual Torch Run, Cop on a Roof and other events. The department is more than happy to pitch in, said Breckenridge police chief Rick Holman.”It’s a good opportunity not only help Special Olympics, but it also allows us as officers to get out in the community, I think, and do positive things,” Holman said, adding that it also promotes the department’s relationship with local businesses. The idea is to partner with the restaurant’s wait staff and help them out any way possible, Holman said. Special Olympics representatives will set up cards explaining the Tip-A-Cop program on every table and provide envelopes for people who want to give special donations. Officers will also wear Special Olympics aprons in which to collect money. All donations are meant to be separate from tips for the regular wait staff, Holman said.”It doesn’t take away from other people trying to make a living,” he said.Already this year, several dozen Tip-A-Cop fundraisers across the state have collected more than $81,000, and that doesn’t include matching donations from businesses, Bumgarner said. All the money raised goes toward Special Olympics events, such as regional and statewide tournaments, competitions and invitationals.Nicole Formosa can be reached at (970) 668-3998 ext. 13625, or at nformosa@summitdaily.comTip-a-Cop Special Olympics fundraiserWhen: 5-9 p.m. on SaturdayWhere: Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, 231 S.
