Breck fireworks on hold

by Jane Stebbins

BRECKENRIDGE – Breckenridge’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display is on hold for now, with town officials citing dry conditions, fire bans and wildfires raging throughout the state.

A final decision will be made June 27, a week prior to Independence Day, giving town officials enough time to announce their decision to the public. All other Fourth of July events, including the parade on Main Street and concerts at the Riverwalk Center, still will be held.

The annual fireworks display in Frisco still is on, but a final decision will be made at a Dillon Reservoir and Recreation Committee meeting Friday.

According to the Associated Press, Vail has cancelled its display on Golden Peak because the risk of fire – even from sparklers and smoke bombs – is too great considering the danger and the fact many firefighters are helping try to control other fires in the state.

Public officials are increasingly wary of fireworks displays, due both to fire danger and public relations. A small fireworks display at the Village at Breckenridge Sunday night garnered phone calls from residents concerned about potential danger.

But that display, which was ignited on small floats set out on Maggie Pond, was okayed by representatives of the Red, White and Blue Fire Department.

Fire officials said the fireworks weren’t typical, as they didn’t shoot into the air, and the threat of sparks going anywhere was nonexistent.
