Breck man arrested after driving truck into river

BRECKENRIDGE – A Breckenridge man with a felony warrant out for his arrest was taken to the Summit County Jail after driving his pickup truck into the Blue River early Saturday morning.According to a report from the Breckenridge Police Department, Hugo Valdez, 26, was westbound on Jefferson Avenue when his Toyota truck plowed through two metal gates near the Dredge restaurant pond, hit a snow bank and landed in the Blue River.Valdez’s blood alcohol level was .227 and he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, felony criminal mischief, driving while revoked and reckless driving. Valdez also faces a felony warrant from Jefferson County for driving with a revoked license. The Red, White and Blue Fire Department put two absorbing booms into the river to catch a small quantity of oil that was leaking from the vehicle, Lt. Kim Scott said.The spill was not significant enough to call in the hazardous materials team, although the team’s leader was notified.Valdez was not injured in the accident and is being held at the Summit County Jail.
