Breckenridge, a charming trip to the past

As the snow melts and the superb skiing subsides for several months, an entirely new playground is revealed. Hikers, bikers, climbers, and horseback riders take to the same slopes skiers ripped down during the winter months. For water lovers, the Arkansas River, in-town Blue River, and nearby Dillon Reservoir provide lots of water to raft, paddle and fish. The entertainment scene is just as exciting during the summer as it is during the winter. Breckenridge is known for its annual music festival, which attracts visitors for diverse classical and contemporary music concerts at the outdoor Riverwalk Center. Slews of restaurants and shops along Main Street create the perfect setting for taking in the small-town charm, excellent cuisine, and, of course, microbrews. For those seeking night life, Breck’s party scene is notorious for live music, exciting happy hours and hoppin’ dance floors. Other historical quirks add to the town’s character. In the height of the Gold Rush, Breckenridge was a hustling, bustling center. In fact, the population was larger a century ago than it is today. Remnants of this era are present throughout Breckenridge. Old mining shacks pop up on hiking trails. The Dredge Restaurant and Bar is a real mining tool from the 1800s. The Gold Pan Saloon is the oldest continually operating saloon west of the Mississippi. The pioneer spirit still lives on today in the hearts of the 1,800 residents who call the town home.
