Breckenridge boy ‘thinks big’

BRECKENRIDGE – When faced with poverty in Peru, a housing crisis in Haiti or a family’s financial struggles in Summit County, 12-year-old Peter Caamano isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves.
The Breckenridge middle schooler knows that his life this local resort community is a privileged one, and he is seemingly tireless in his efforts to reach out to those who aren’t as lucky as he is.
Peter’s cause du jour is a local Habitat for Humanity project that will help provide homes for low-income families in Breckenridge. He can be found today, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., outside his parents’ shop in Main Street Station selling brats, chili-cheese dogs, muffins and cookies to raise money for the nonprofit.
Earlier this year, Peter and his sixth-grade classmates at Summit Middle School were each assigned to come up with a “global action plan” – a project through which to reduce poverty. Peter’s plan, which included a series of fundraisers for Habitat for Humanity Haiti, was voted the best in his grade by his peers, who then worked together to implement it by organizing bake sales at the school.
Peter, however, wasn’t satisfied with the scale of the project.
“I was supposed to raise money inside school for a trustworthy organization,” he said. “The way I look at it, we should think big, so I took it outside of school too.”
Peter contacted the local branch of Habitat for Humanity, reasoning that local action and global action would pair well. He learned of the Breckenridge project and decided to expand his bake-sale effort out into the community. He has also contacted local banks, asking for matching funds to whatever amount of money he and his friends raise. And he called the Summit Daily News to make sure his event would be well publicized and attended.
With the help of his teachers and classmates, Peter procured barbecue supplies and several batches of baked goods. Thursday night, he whipped up a few dozen of his own corn-meal muffins to serve alongside the chili. The sixth-graders will work three-hour shifts to sell their wares to hungry passers-by.
“It is a group effort. Everybody has participated in some way,” Peter said.
So far, the students have raised $420 toward their goal of $1,000.
“There have been some stressful times. I’ve had to contact all the people to make sure they would bring in their baked goods and sign up for volunteering. But it all pays off in the end. It feels really good to see how much money we’ve raised so far, and I think we’re going to do a great job on Saturday,” Peter said.
