5 p.m.: The Breckenridge Police Department responded to a request around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office in Florida to help locate a missing child believed to be in Breckenridge, according to a Breckenridge Police news release.

Sarasota officials believed the child was with his father, Ryan Brown of Sarasota, in Breckenridge. Police located a vehicle registered to Brown at a residence on the 200 block of North French Street, and the police and Summit County Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter around the area.

Law enforcement officers surveilled and attempted to contact Brown, and through communication with other residents of the home, they found out the child, Brown’s son, was with Brown.

Police and deputies called in an armored rescue vehicle “despite no threat to public safety and out of an abundance of caution,” according to the release. Officials also asked the public to avoid the area, and they issued an SC Alert text message to tell residents in the area to shelter in place.

The Breckenridge Police and Sheriff’s Office deputies negotiated a peaceful surrender through Brown’s attorney and took Brown into custody on an outstanding warrant, which was for interference with child custody in Sarasota, according to Breckenridge Police spokesperson Colleen Goettelman.

Brown’s son is now in a safe environment, according to the news release.

4:15 p.m.: A Summit County Alert text message warning people nearby the incident to shelter in place has been sent to people near the investigation. Breckenridge Police Department said, “There is still no threat to the community,” in an updated Facebook post.

3:30 p.m.: The Breckenridge Police Department posted on its Facebook page Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. that it had officers on the 200 block of North French Street conducting an investigation and there was no threat to public safety.

An update about an hour later stated that armored rescue vehicles were in the area “as a precaution,” and there was still no threat to public safety. The update asked the public to avoid the area during the investigation.
