Breckenridge manipulating Warrior’s Mark annexation election

As a Warrior’s Mark resident, we are appalled at the manipulation of the annexation election by the town of Breckenridge. The town wants its projected $2.3 million in additional taxes and it will do whatever it takes to acquire the area.

We urge the citizens of Warrior’s Mark to consider whether they want to be part of a town that would undertake the following:

The ballot misleads voters to believe that a one-time maximum fee of $90 per taxed lot will be the total cost to residents. This only covers the cost of one snowplow turnaround.

The ballot does not mention increased mill levies and transfer taxes, which are in the town’s budget. Once the area is annexed, the town can levy special assessments without further voting. So, the ballot is dishonest and would lead uninformed voters to believe that they will get many improvements for a one-time fee of $90.

Although this is not required in presidential elections, the town requires absentee voters to notarize their ballots. This discriminates against absentee voters, who had a majority “no” vote in the past annexation election.

Based on the town’s jigsaw approach to annexation and municipal law, it has selected municipal law which states that absentee ballots be available only 10 days prior to the election.

Therefore, absentee voters have 10 or fewer days for the ballot to reach them by U.S. Mail, have it notarized and have it be received by the deadline of Oct. 1. Again, this is another roadblock for those who have a history of voting “no” for annexation.

The town is manipulating the system and stealing our voting rights. It’s hard to believe that town officials can sleep at night knowing how they are abusing freedoms we are guaranteed as Americans.
