Broken windows and graffitied walls at a home in Breckenridge made neighbors wonder if it had been vandalized earlier this month. According to town officials, the owner did the damage themselves, intending to tear down and rebuild the home.

Neighbors of a house on North Pine Street in Breckenridge reported what they assumed to be vandalism to Breckenridge Police earlier this month when they saw broken windows and graffiti on the walls of a building. It turns out no vandalism took place, as the owners were the ones that did the damage.

Rick Holman, the town’s interim director of public safety, wrote in an email that the property owners had a “little pre-demolition party,” as they plan to tear down the structure and replace it.

Holman wrote that the broken windows, graffiti and house being generally “trashed” made it look like an act of vandalism. He spoke to the owner, who will put construction fencing around the property as soon as possible and is working to finalize demolition permits with the town.

Colleen Goettelman, the Breckenridge Police Department’s administrative supervisor, wrote in an email that concerned neighbors have been made aware of the situation.
