Breckenridge post office satellite move pending as USPS evaluates sites

BRECKENRIDGE – Users of the Breckenridge post office satellite near City Market may continue receiving their mail at the site for a couple more months as the U.S. Postal Service continues to evaluate relocation sites.

“There is no time element as there was originally,” USPS spokesman Al Desarro said, adding that a new location will probably be selected by March.

Many of the satellite’s roughly 800 users vocally opposed the postal service’s abrupt August announcement of plans to move the satellite to Towne Square Mall on Main Street. Town officials proposed alternatives, which Desarro said the postal service continues to evaluate.

“The sites we are reviewing we think definitely meet the city’s concerns,” Desarro said.

The existing site – on a 2.75 acre parcel at 410 N. Park Avenue – is to be sold as the postal service works to offset roughly $7 billion in debt.

The town last October cleared plans to move the satellite to a site at 1730 Airport Road.

Desarro said then a decision was expected by the end of the year. On Friday he said the postal service continues to review several factors regarding a new site.

“We’ve just got to make sure that everything is properly in place. There is absolutely an active effort,” he said.

Concerns with the Towne Square Mall site regarded its location in an area where parking access is tough and traffic is heavier.
