It is expected to be a busy summer season for the town of Breckenridge.

Throughout the often busy summer season, Breckenridge will be focusing on several expansion and improvement projects. Most notably, Breckenridge will be expanding the popular Kingdom Park skatepark and will be constructing a brand new pavilion around the Kingdom Park baseball fields.

Skatepark expansion

The Kingdom Park skatepark expansion project is already well underway with a fence being installed around the perimeter of the skatepark on April 30. The expansion is expected to add an additional 12,500 square feet of area to the existing skate park, pushing the park’s skate-able area to 31,500 square feet.

According to the 2025 Breckenridge adopted budget, the project is expected to cost the town $1,500,000.

The addition will line the northeast side of skatepark, allowing room for a new layout of features. The features are expected to provide a more mellow space for beginners to hone their street style tricks before venturing over to the more advanced features on the other side of the park.

Team Pain Skate Parks — out of Winter Park, Florida — originally built and designed the first skatepark in Breckenridge in 1999. The town of Breckenridge then tasked Team Pain with the construction of the updated park. Proving itself as a trusted partner, Team Pain will also complete the expansion project for Breckenridge.

According to the town of Breckenridge, the expansion project is expected to last the majority of the summer with intermittent closures taking place. Currently, the skatepark is open from 4-7:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday; and weekends from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“To give the skate community access to the skatepark for the duration of the project was really important to us,” Breckenridge assistant recreation director Jon Dorr said. “Besides the expansion, we are fixing coping blocks in the original skatepark and getting that to match the new stuff.”

Kingdom Ballfields Pavilion

On the other side of Kingdom Park, Breckenridge will also be working throughout the summer season on a new pavilion around the Kingdom Park Ballfields.

The pavilion will serve as another recent addition to Kingdom Park after turf was installed at the baseball diamonds in 2024. With the brand new turf fields, the pavilion project will mainly focus on renovating the space between the two fields.

The renovations include demolishing the existing restroom and pavilion structure, regrading the site to meet ADA requirements, rebuilding the restroom, adding a shade structure, installing batting cages, improving viewing locations and creating a safer vehicular entry to the parking lot.

Currently, the Kingdom Park Ballfields has a drop-off zone that is cumbersome due to an entry island in the middle of the parking lot. Construction crews would demolish the entry island to create a more seamless drop-off process.

While the existing pavilion has served its purpose over the years, the new structure will serve as an enhanced hub for both ballfields.

“There are safety concerns with it being 30-plus years old and not being ADA compliant,” Dorr said. “Those fields are not necessarily baseball fields. We need to have a wheelchair wheel onto the field to spectate for soccer or play in a game. There are issues with the current configuration.”

The new pavilion will be outfitted with Masonville buff stone veneer, wood timbers and a standing seam metal roof. The project will also connect the Summit County Recreation Path to the ballfields allowing guests and locals alike to easily get to the fields via bike, foot or other forms of transportation.

According to the 2025 adopted budget, the Kingdom Park Ballfields Pavilion is anticipated to cost $3 million. Around $1 million is set to be spent on the project in 2025 with the remaining $2 million allocated to a future year’s budget.

The project is scheduled to take place throughout the summer, but it does not yet have an anticipated start or end date.

“We will present the final fiscal cost of it next Tuesday, May 13,” Dorr said. “Council will then give us direction to move forward or go back to the drawing board. We feel strongly about the numbers and the scope of the project as completely designed.”
