Breck’s Imperial Challenge a go

BRECKENRIDGE – Imperial Challenge organizer Marc Carlisle said Wednesday he is excited that the event will go off next month at Breckenridge Ski Resort.Carlisle was not sure earlier this week whether the event would happen due to ski company concerns over liability. He said Wednesday that he received an e-mail message from the resort marketing department assuring him the event would happen. The 14th annual Imperial Challenge is set for April 16.Concerns by the ski area over liability for all the events it hosts has the legal department closely scrutinizing the company’s exposure, ski resort spokeswoman Emily Jacob said. “This is not new,” Jacob said. “If one bad thing happens at one small event, then we don’t have any events anymore. It sounds drastic, but as the climate changes we have to be flexible with it.”The E-Chair Challenge, in which teams of competitors counted the number of runs on the lift, was canceled this year because of exorbitant insurance costs. Each event is considered by the company’s legal department and handled on a case-by-case basis, Jacob said. The fate of the Breckenridge Bump Buffet tentatively set for April 17 is still unknown, Jacob said Wednesday. The Imperial Challenge is a favorite local endurance event, but 40 percent of its participants are from the Front Range, Carlisle said.Carlisle said he expects about 300 people to participate.Kim Marquis can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 249, or at kmarquis@summitdaily.com.
