Bush leaves us with a heavy burden

This letter is written in response to a poll I have been conducting over the past few days. Informally, I have been asking voters of Summit County who they are voting for in the presidential election and why. Parallel to national polls, the results show Bush leading Kerry slightly. When asked why these voters chose Bush, the number one response was, “He’s strong on defense.” Of the Bush voters, the criticism I heard most often about Kerry is his weakness in regards to national defense. It is not surprising in a post 9/11 world, that national security is a central issue, and one that will no doubt govern the election. Though I believe that security is important, I have to question the amount of emphasis we are placing on defense. At what point are we going to start working on the problems here? I am 22 years old. I do not have health insurance. During the Bush administration’s tenure in office, I have watched $3.6 trillion added to a debt that my generation will be forced to pay off. I have seen environmental policy regress and emphasis on conservation dwindle. I have watched my grandparents struggle. As an education major, I have worked in school systems where children are being taught to tests. With a debt that is compounding, a threat of environmental degradation, school systems where children are not being taught to think, health care I cannot afford and a retirement that I may never get, I ask, “What are we defending?”I encourage everyone to think about this election not just in terms of defense or taxes, but in terms of what will benefit the generation that faces all of these problems.
