Local jewlery designer Jennifer Suarez of Origami Owls is working with La Leche to raise money for breastfeeding education in Summit County.

The owl, a sacred symbol of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, is also closely tied to a local businesswoman helping to bring enlightenment to moms in Summit County by raising money for breastfeeding education.

The La Leche League of Summit County is hosting multiple events today to raise funds to continue operations and purchase new books for their library. La Leche is an international organization helping breastfeeding mothers, offering support, education and other resources. The group is partnering with Jennifer Suarez, a local jewelry designer for Origami Owl.

"One of the main missions of Origami Owl as a company is to be a force for good," she said. "I'm always looking for opportunities to help local organizations and people looking to raise money for different things that benefit the community."

Griffin and Suarez originally met through homeschooling their children and decided to work together to raise the money La Leche needed. All profits from the jewelry sales at the events, either online or in-person, will go toward the organization.

"Our lending library has things like breastfeeding books, but most of the books are older than the moms who would read them," Griffin said.

Suarez started working as a local Origami Owl representative in July. Most lockets cost $20 and up, depending on the customization. Customers can choose charms, words and other designs to tell their personal stories.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, the two will be at Backcountry Brewery to host a meeting for people interested in learning more about the organization or wanting to purchase jewelry to benefit La Leche.

Anyone wanting to participate can also visit http://livinginspiration.origamiowl.com and purchase items online. At checkout, just click "Jewelry Bar Information" and then select "La Leche Fundraiser" for the group to receive credit.

At 7 p.m. Suarez will also host a live, interactive Facebook event where she will post comments and tell stories about her business and La Leche. The event includes a free giveaway and anyone interested in participating must contact Suarez to be added to the event.

"We want it to keep going to help new and expectant moms," Griffin said. "This is a fun way to work together."

This is the first time the group has needed to raise funds, after the seed money from the national organization recently ran out. The Summit County chapter began a little more than two years ago, and averages about eight women at the meetings, Griffin said.

"My favorite part about doing this is not just to help people in the community, but the whole point behind the jewelry is telling a story, and I love hearing why people create what they do," Suarez said.
