New arrivals take over The Dog House in Breckenridge
Summit Daily News
For Rebecca and Brent Bean, taking over ownership of The Dog House in Breckenridge was an easy decision.
“He’s always wanted to own a business, and I’ve always wanted to have a dog kennel ever since I saw ‘The Muppets Take Manhattan,'” said Rebecca, a certified dog trainer. In the movie, Rolf the dog works at a Delaware dog-lodging facility. “I was probably 4 years old, and ever since then I wanted to work in a kennel.”
The couple – along with their 3-year-old daughter, a cat and a German shepherd – recently moved to Summit County from Texas, where they both worked as teachers. The family visited Breckenridge this past June on vacation, and “fell in love with the place.” They went home, did some research, found the business for sale and snatched it right up.
So far, Rebecca says she loves everything about the business: meeting different dogs every day and getting to know the people in the area. The couple has always wanted to live in a small town – they were used to “the metroplex of Dallas-Fort Worth” – where people “know your name already.” They see the county as a wonderful family environment in which to raise their daughter.
Another bonus to their new home: all of the beautiful and unique dogs around Breckenridge. Instead of sitting at Starbucks to people watch, they sit outside the cafe to dog-watch.
“It’s like a parade of dogs,” Rebecca said.
The Dog House started up seven years ago, and offers boarding, day care and grooming services. The couple plans on keeping the existing services, hours and prices, but hopes to add dog training and make some improvements to the existing facilities. They want to expand the outdoor play area, and fix up the indoor day care space and kennel area.
The Breckenridge Resort Chamber is hosting a grand re-opening and ribbon cutting at The Dog House Wednesday. The celebration will include prizes, appetizers and champagne. Dogs are welcome.
“It’s a chance for people to meet us and be reassured,” Rebecca said. “People who have been coming here for seven years need to know their dogs will still be in good hands.”
