C-DOT: The Challenges We Face

* Travel demand along the Interstate 70 corridor is projected to increase by more than 10 million trips at the Eisenhower Tunnel over the next 25 years. Approximately 10 million vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower Tunnel in 2000. * In 2025, the Front Range population is expected to reach approximately 5 million – a 45 percent increase – creating a substantial increase in summer and winter recreation travel demand in the corridor.* The 2025 nine-county corridor population region (Clear Creek, Eagle, Garfield, Gilpin, Grand, Lake, Park, Pitkin and Summit) is expected to reach approximately 340,000 – a 101 percent increase* Future peak weekday travel demand in some parts of the corridor in 2025 will be similar to current weekend levels of travel demand. * More than 200 recreational sites are within six miles of the corridor, including 15 ski areas that are accessed via I-70* If no major improvements are made, it could affect the economy of the nine-county region due to areduction in recreational spending in the corridor that could affect growth in gross regional product by up to $10 billion by 2035.* A $4 billion threshold – deemed to be a “reasonable” and affordable amount, has been set on the project, which eliminates many of the possible alternatives, including rail, from the list.* The Transportation Commission has committed approximately $1.6 billion of the Strategic Corridor Investment Program to the corridor – an amount that might be available over the next 20 years. Depending on the decision on the preferred alternative for I-70, some of the uncommitted funds may be allocated to this corridor, although the likelihood exists that a number of other highways might have a higher priority for allocation of the funds.
