C. Gerald James: Keystone PID a bad deal

C. Gerald James
Keystone

In response to SDN ballot picks in the Oct. 18 issue, I was very disappointed that SDN endorsed a favorable vote for the Keystone Parkway improvement (PID) propositions 1A, 1B, 1C. I am a fan and daily reader of the SDN and feel it does a good job of being the “eyes and ears” of Summit County. That made it even more disappointing that they ignored the opposition’s factual list of objectives (visit http://www.keystoneblogs.com) and gave their support based on three reasons. 1. “It’s a plus for homeowners and the resort.” Many people believe it’s a plus for the resort, but saying it’s a plus for homeowners is unproved, speculative and a real stretch. 2. “It makes sense to do it now with construction costs so low.” With this poor economy, it’s a great time to buy or build a house, buy a car, or purchase a Caribbean cruise. The only problem is, can you afford it? The American public is not buying houses, cars or cruises. 3. “It seems clear the community will do this.” They said this knowing a poll they were conducting showed that there was a sizable larger percentage of those opposed than those in favor.

Life is full of disappointments. There must be a genuine reason why SDN endorsed this. The only reason that makes sense to me is the advertising revenue stream they receive year after year from one major benefactor, Vail Resorts. If that is true, I am totally and absolutely disappointed. I think I’ll go for the Caribbean cruise – at least that’s a one-time expense and not one I will pay for an eternity.
