C.M. Fitzpatrick: Travesty of justice

I’m writing regarding a 54-year-old woman, with no prior criminal history, found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison for the “white collar” crime of embezzlement. What your paper described, and what I have known about this woman for my entire life, is as completely different as night and day, black and white, good and evil.

The situations involving Trudy Pillow were brought to my attention by her family members. I was astonished when I read the article in your newspaper, via the internet, and heard the details of the of events surrounding the trial and sentencing. I am dumbfounded by the blatant cronyism in your community.

I have known Ms. Pillow, the true victim in this case, all her life. Am I surprised at this verdict and sentence? You could say that! As a longtime member of the judicial and law enforcement community, I’ve seen child molesters, wife beaters major drug dealers and prior parolees of violent crimes, all in the State of Colorado, given less prison time; basically slaps on the wrists.

People of Summit County, this is a travesty of justice. Wake up! There are some indecipherable, incomprehensible, mystifying, perplexing and just strange dealings going on within your community. Elections are coming up soon. Please do not let the “small town” mentally take over your community. Do not chase out the community’s life blood with cronyism.
