Carolyn Layne: Obama’s the one

I admire John McCain for his patriotism and service to country, but he is not the best choice for president. In last night’s debate, while Sen. Obama was sticking to the issues, McCain was grasping and emotional. He couldn’t focus and drifted to things that were not relevant. Twice he mentioned that Sarah Palin knows what it is like to have a special needs child. So what? Does that qualify her to be vice president?

I respect that Sarah Palin is a good mother and a feisty lady; however, I do not admire her family values. Her views are narrow and biased. I shudder to think that she could possibly become president. Given the power and the opportunity, she would move this country to the very far conservative right and closer to combining church and state. I don’t want her choosing Supreme Court justices.

I do admire Sen. Obama for his family values, tolerance, and ability to bring people together. He has his own Christian faith, but does not try to impose his beliefs on others. He will uphold the rights of all, regardless of sex, religion, race … not just the mainstream, but the different as well. He will not set this country back decades on freedom of choice. I feel comfortable that he would be calm and cool under pressure in a crisis or a time of war. He has made himself clear on all issues.

Recently, letters are becoming more hateful and name calling. People who are calling Sen. Obama terrorist or radical are indeed radical themselves. These same people are deriding others for their views. Stick to the issues, study the records, and do your homework. Not only in the lower states but in Alaska as well.
