Cathy Gammel: Winter rec & equal access

Cathy GammelSilverthorne

I find it quite interesting that half of the school district is pushing equal access while another part is getting rid of the winter rec program. The winter rec program is a program of equal access. More than half of our students cannot afford to learn to ski, snowboard, ice skate or play hockey. They can’t afford passes, equipment or even warm clothes for some. By taking away the winter program, we are clearly dividing this community into the haves and the have-nots. Shame on you. Are school board seems to be always about changing to the newest theory, whether it is IB (commonly known as the “I’m Better” program) or the new Equal Access idea.Cutting the winter rec program is outright wrong. Check with Winter Park Schools or Steamboat. All their children get to experience the reason most of us are here. We live here for the fabulous outdoor activities, which surround us here in the High Country. We should share these blessings with all our children, not just those that can afford it on their own.
