Cat’s heating pad starts house fire

BRECKENRIDGE – A heating pad for a cat started a fire in the garage of a Silver Shekel home Monday night.

The Red, White and Blue Fire Department responded to an emergency call on Silver Circle about 9 p.m. and found smoke and flames issuing from the garage of the two-story home.

Residents Joanne Sepulveda and Steve Link told authorities they were in the basement watching TV when they smelled something burning. Thinking first it was dessert burning in the oven, Link checked the kitchen. Seeing no fire, he checked the garage and found flames around the cat’s igloo house. The igloo had a heating pad inside, he said.

According to the Sheriff’s Office report, authorities were enlisting the assistance of local American Red Cross workers to help the couple.

Red, White and Blue public information officer Kim O’Brien said firefighters (including a Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue crew) were fortunate because of low wind, a hydrant right across the street and the house’s close proximity to the north fire station.

“We thank the occupants for calling 911 so quickly,” she said. “It was a picture-perfect fire, if you can have such a thing. We really can’t stress enough how important it is to notify 911 early. And, the cat came back alive.”

The fire was contained, and damage was limited to the garage. O’Brien said a full fire investigation would be conducted to assess the cause.
