FARMER’S KORNER – Before escaping for summer vacation, teachers at Summit High School recognized a number of students who have exhibited outstanding character in school.Lisa Brozovich Chaperone nominated senior Tara Kelley:”I would like to nominate Tara Kelley for outstanding senior character. Tara traveled to Mexico with the Spanish classes in February of this year. She is a great representative of the 23 students who participated in this Spanish immersion trip. They were complimented wherever they went on their politeness and good behavior. Tara leads by quiet example. She displays good character, maturity and is responsible. While on the trip, she worked with two other seniors to make awards for all trip participants for our last night celebration. Tara richly deserves this award.”

Susan Moccatta nominated Taylor Van Duinen:”I would like to nominate Taylor Van Duinen. I know Taylor from Spanish Honor Society but learned what a talented, caring, responsible, respectful role model for young adults she is while I traveled with her through Mexico on our SHS Spanish 2007 trip. Taylor set a high standard for herself, and therefore for the other students, to improve her Spanish speaking and listening skills and deepen her understanding of the Mexican culture. I observed Taylor taking advantage of every learning experience offered to us whether it was speaking in Spanish to a street vendor, our tour guide, the bus driver, the hotel reception staff, striking-up a conversation with me in Spanish, asking directions or posing questions in Spanish in reference to the artifacts or works of art we were viewing. She demonstrated her interest and respect to our Mexican teachers and tour guides by always being at the center of a Spanish lesson given by a native speaker and responding or asking questions in Spanish about their heritage, civilization and history. I and our tour guides were impressed by Taylor’s maturity and knowledge of the Spanish language and Mexican culture. I felt proud to have a such a remarkable Summit High School student represent herself as a tourist and as a member of our tour from the United States.”Erick Finnestead nominated Garrick Abt:”Garrick has served as a positive role model for underclassmen because of the many activities he is involved with at SHS. He is involved with the Summit Singers, video productions, and was a valued member of the fall play and spring musical. What strikes me most about Garrick is that each and every day he comes to SHS with a smile on his face, ready and willing to make it a better for those around him. He is an exemplar of doing the right thing and upholding character even when facing challenges. He is a delight to work with and a pleasure to talk to. He has been a tremendous asset to the community of SHS whether it be starring as David Blaine or headlining a rock concert. Garrick is extremely worthy of the outstanding character of the month award.”

Erika Kaltenbach nominated Jessica Duffield:”I would like to nominate Jessica Duffield for outstanding character! Jessica has one of the best attitudes and spirits I have seen in a student. Jessica brings life and excitement to class and she truly enjoys people and people love her. “Jessica comes in each day with a huge smile and a hello for her classmates. She is constantly enjoying herself and full of life!

“Not only does Jessica have a wonderful presence about her, she is confident and open to continual improvement. She is not a ‘typical’ student when met with difficulties. She takes a close look at mistakes she makes and does not get angry. She instead takes it as an opportunity to learn her error. She is great at asking help from others and in turn, she gratefully offers help when she can. These are skills that show a tremendous amount of maturity and poise.”Finally, one of my favorite things about Jessica is her understanding of life beyond school. If I see her in the community she shares a warm hello and conversation – another sophisticated quality she possesses Jessica has been wonderful to have in class. I wish her the best of luck and will miss her next year!”Laura Graf nominated Chelsea Seegers:”I would like to nominate Chelsea Seegers as an outstanding senior. Chelsea is a talented, motivated young woman who truly seeks to embrace every opportunity with enthusiasm and dedication. Throughout the four years I have known Chelsea, I have witnessed her mature and grow into an exemplary student and participating member of her community, and as a person she is always respectful and kind to everyone she meets. I am impressed by the manner in which Chelsea has contributed to our high school, from student government to school plays to the swim team and beyond. There is that quote that talks about how when someone works at shining to their full potential they inspire others to do the same – that is how I view Chelsea, and I am excited to hear about her successes that will certainly be a part of her future!”
