Charlie & Nancy Gardner: Support Silverthorne Town Council

Charlie & Nancy GardnerSilverthorne

We voted “no” to reject the town charter amendment and to support the Silverthorne Town Council in its unanimous efforts to complete the Blue River Trail. The originators and the supporters of this amendment state that this is not about the BRT but is about our right to vote. We find this statement disingenuous at best. The originators of this amendment are the same property owners who have been obstructing the the town from completing this segment of the BRT. Coincidence? We think not. Supporters of the amendment have stated in letters to the editor: “Why does the Town of Silverthorne not trust us to vote? What are they trying to hide?”; “Our current town council does not seem to want to allow the citizen’s of our town to vote on such issues.”; “… all residents should be involved in deciding important issues …”Approximately four months ago the residents of Silverthorne, who took the time to be involved in deciding important issues, elected the majority (four out of seven members) of the current STC. Prior to the election, three of the five candidates, who were reelected, reluctantly supported the use of eminent domain to complete this segment of the BRT when the property owners left them with no other choice. A fourth candidate, elected to a first term, supported the council’s current approach. All four candidates received 60 percent or more of the votes. A fifth candidate who was not elected to the council personally opposed the use of eminent domain. None of the candidates hid their position on this issue. In April we voted for four of the seven current members of the council because of their support for the BRT. Please vote “no” and support our council, which we elected.
