Children should view war and learn to appreciate the horrors

Contrary to the concern of the Vail resident you quoted Tuesday concerning his children being able to view war footage on television, I say, let our children and their parents see what war is really like – rather than the romanticized versions portrayed in most movies, violent television programs and videos.

I understand the love of a father and need to protect his children.

But it’s easy to blame the media as the source of our problems, when in actuality the media simply reflects them. If only we had had such candid coverage in Vietnam.

Perhaps, then, Americans might have known what soldiers in the field knew – the great lie of that war. Sometimes we must defend ourselves with war, and I fully support our soldiers in the field, though I do not support a president and vice president who have never been in combat, much less served in the military, in the vice president’s case.

Maybe the coverage of this war will help to sensitize future generations about the ongoing horror and pain of war and what it does to the people of the nations who engage in it.

So many of my father’s World War II generation, my uncle’s Korean War generation and my Vietnam War generation still struggle through addictions, broken families and broken lives.

In my opinion, one of our country’s major flaws is denial. Our children should learn to look the real world in the eye.
