Chris Hoxie: Why do kids need 3 more days of test prep?

I find it more than a coincidence that Karina Wetherbee’s commentary on the life of her grandfather, Max Dercum, was positioned right above two great letters by parents concerned about the possible demise of the winter recreation program.

Question: Which would Max choose? The winter recreation program for elementary school children? Or an additional three-day “pump up” for a state test that the students should already be prepared for? I think we know the answer.

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, could it possibly be that it’s not the elementary school students who need an additional three days to prepare for a statewide test but the teachers who need a three-day refresher on how to teach in a timely and effective manner?. My suggestion would be to keep the winter recreation program and send the teachers back to school.
