Chris Ornes: Opposed to the Keystone PID

Chris Ornes

I have read with great interest the various communications re: the proposed Keystone Property Improvement District, (The Plan). Many of my friends and neighbors support this plan to “spiff” up the highway that transits Keystone.

The problem I see with The Plan is that is not part of an overall Keystone improvement plan that would insure new and improved additions to the Keystone retail base. Jack Rouse, in his letter to the editor of Oct. 14, points out that the improvements to the highway would “say this is a special place.” But it is not a special place, yet. There needs to be many improvements in the resort. Keystone is well known for its great groomed runs, night skiing, River Run festivals and mountain biking, to name a few. It is not a destination for non-skiing/biking or non-festival visitors. There is minimal shopping and dining. The employee housing near the traffic light is an eyesore. The empty tennis barn, the empty shops by Keystone Lake, the many standing beetle killed trees.

Like many folks, my home in Keystone is a very large part of my net worth. Its value now and in the future is of great importance to me and my family. I am in favor of just about anything that will help maintain or increase its value. I believe this plan only makes sense if it is part of an overall plan that includes Vail Resorts’ commitment to continue to enhance the total Keystone experience.

Vail Resorts will benefit the most by any taxpayer-borne new tax plan. We need a better partnership between Keystone residents and the resort. Then and only then does this taxpayer expense make any sense.
