Summit County Church of Christ in Frisco and a youth group from Plano, Tex., are donating some elbow grease to help out the local community this week.

More than 40 young people and adults are performing 600 hours of work at Frisco Elementary School and the Elks Lodge in Silverthorne. At the school, volunteers are sanitizing furniture and equipment and painting classrooms. At the lodge, the kitchen is getting a thorough cleaning and facelift.

“The school is obvious – their finances are always tight, and this is work that needs to be done,” said church member Martin Stone. “Our help is a direct service to the neighborhood and community.”

Church minister Stan Johnson said the group selected the Elks Lodge because of its weekly dinners provided to low-income families and individuals.

“Our members already help serve food there on Tuesday nights, but this is another way we can be directly involved in service to the less privileged of our area,” Johnson said.

The youth group is from the McDermott Road Church of Christ in Plano. This is its second year in Summit County doing service work.

“Jesus lived a life of service, and we’re teaching our kids to do the same thing,” said Sam Brinson, the church’s youth minister.

Summit County Church of Christ operates a food pantry on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The church is located at 1002 South Seventh Ave., Frisco. For more information, call Stan Johnson at (970) 668-5072.
