Citizens Police Academy to kick off Sept. 7

Daily News staff report

Local law enforcement agencies are currently accepting applications for the sixth annual Citizens Police Academy, an extensive look into the training and responsibilities of law enforcement and fire protection agencies.

The free academy begins Wednesday, Sept. 7 and sessions will be held at various locations every Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. through October 12. There will also be two Saturday sessions on September 17 and October 1 from 10 a.m.-3p.m.

A partnership between Summit County’s five law enforcement agencies, the academy offers 25 citizens an opportunity to learn about a broad range of topics including hiring and training, internal affairs investigations, SWAT and the use of force, patrol procedures, criminal investigations, traffic stops, DUI simulation, shooting range instruction and tours of the jail and the courts. The stated goal of the academy is to improve communications and relationships between the police and the public and to create a small group of well-informed citizens who have a better understanding of the practices and services of law enforcement.

Instructors will include authorities and officers from a all four towns’ police departments and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. This year’s academy will also include a mock trial scenario and a training on fire response.

Those interested in attending the academy should contact their local law enforcement agency for an application.
