CJ Mueller: County should hire locally

I agree. We have a great local candidate. And I have read several articles in the SDN extolling the benefits of supporting local business, even if you pay more for the product or service, the local economy is enhanced by “hiring a local.” So why is it that the Highway 9 project is given to a Denver contractor? I hope a few of you get the irony in the letter to which I refer, and I hope that Summit County Government will put their money in some locals’ pockets to finish the highway project, even if it costs more, because isn’t the economy enhanced by using locals even if it costs more?

I went to one of the meetings concerning the highway project and was told the county has an “obligation” to the taxpayers to take the lowest bid. Isn’t there a little “obligation” to local business and workers to keep the money in the county? And perhaps some local pride would have resulted in a better finished product. Poor compaction on the north-bound shoulder just before Tiger Road has resulted in some bad accidents this winter – is the Denver contractor liable for the damages caused by this poor workmanship? I look forward to a reply.
