BRECKENRIDGE – Colorado Mountain College photography student Joe Kusumoto is displaying his work at Clint’s Bakery and Coffeehouse in Breckenridge.

Kusumoto has a background in architecture, so his work reflects a strong sense of design. Instructor Donald Clemmey is one of the instructors who has taught Kusumoto advanced photography techniques throughout the years.

“There is, I think, a little “tension’ in his people photographs, perhaps a small degree of uneasiness between the subject and photographer,” Clemmey said. “But I think this is due to his shooting in less developed areas and countries. His personality is charming enough that the people in his photos allow him to photograph where others may not have been able to approach them at all. He manages to capture them. It’s not just a snapshot.”

One of the things Clemmey has worked on with Kusumoto is his printing techniques.

“His printing has improved enormously,” he said. “He’s become proficient, so that now I believe he can convey what he originally intended when he fires off a frame. And, knowing what to do allows him to break the rules and experiment and achieve consistent results – reach beyond his original intent in his artistic expression.”
