CO Senate gives initial OK to civil unions bill

DENVER (AP) – Colorado Democrats are moving forward with a proposal to grant same-sex couples the ability to enter into civil unions.

The measure passed an initial vote in the Senate on Wednesday over objections from Republican lawmakers.

They argued the proposal would undermine the institution of marriage.

The sponsor of the bill, Democratic Sen. Pat Steadman of Denver, became emotional during the debate. He pleaded that all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, should have the same rights.

Steadman’s bill faces another vote in the Senate before it can head to House.

Democrats concede it will face a difficult challenge in that chamber, where Republicans hold a one-vote edge.
