Colorado congressman undergoes back surgery

ARVADA ” Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., underwent surgery for a herniated disc in his lower back, his spokesman said Thursday.

Beauprez had the operation Wednesday and is expected to return to work next week, spokesman Jordan Stoick said.

“Last night’s procedure went smoothly,” Stoick said in a statement.

Beauprez, a second-term congressman and former state GOP chairman, plans to run for governor in 2006.

Back pain had forced him to miss a scheduled appearance Saturday in Grand Junction, Stoick said earlier.
