The Lake Dillon Theatre Company and the town of Dillon hosted the 2014 Colorado Grand on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with entrants from around the world and several 1920s and ’30s cars braving the rain at the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre and Marina Park.

The Colorado Grand is an annual charity tour for sports and racecars from 1960 and earlier. Englewood automotive enthusiast Bob Sutherland founded the event in 1989. Every September at the peak of the fall color season, approximately 85 vintage cars are driven in this relaxed, noncompetitive event, covering 1,000 miles through the Rockies in five days.

“We are very excited to host the Colorado Grand this year and are honored to be among their 2014 Colorado charities,” said Josh Blanchard, Lake Dillon Theatre Company executive director. “The cars are amazing. The public display is truly a unique experience for our community.”

The Colorado Grand currently generates about $300,000 annually, and to date the event has contributed more than $4 million to small Colorado charities and Western Slope towns, and has funded college scholarships for graduating high-school seniors in those towns.

The Colorado Grand is run with the cooperation of the Colorado State Patrol. This year’s event ran from Monday, Sept. 8, through Saturday, Sept. 13. Major sponsors include Mercedes-Benz, Hagerty Insurance, WeatherTech, RM Auctions and Griot’s Garage.
