A snowstorm battered the Colorado Rocky Mountains on Tuesday, March 18, and Wednesday, March 19, leading to multiple closures, a six-vehicle pileup, a pickup going over the embankment of Interstate 70 and other crashes, according to public safety agencies.

Colorado State Patrol trooper Sherri Mendez said that between 4 p.m. Tuesday and noon Wednesday, there were 11 motorist assists, two injury crashes and four crashes that resulted only in property damage. There were also multiple slide-offs reported on westbound I-70 near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels, Mendez said.

Summit Fire & EMS wrote in a Facebook post that it responded to two major crashes “blamed in part on icy roads.”

Around 5 p.m. Tuesday, the Summit County 911 Center received a report of a car that went over the embankment and guardrail on eastbound I-70 near Milepost 212, not far from the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels, Summit Fire & EMS said.

Summit Fire & EMS responded with two engines and an ambulance and discovered a white pickup about 400 feet down the embankment with the three occupants of the vehicle out and walking around, the Facebook post states. When a medic rappelled down the hill, the three occupants complained of minor injuries but were able to climb back to the roadway with assistance, according to Summit Fire & EMS. They were evaluated and reportedly declined further treatment or transport to the hospital.

Then, around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Summit Fire & EMS responded to a report of a six-vehicle crash on Colorado 91, which is between Interstate 70 and Leadville, the Facebook post states. One person was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, and the highway was closed for about two hours to get the crash cleared, according to Summit Fire & EMS.

On Wednesday, around 10 a.m., State Patrol received a report of a head-on crash on Colorado Highway 9 on Hoosier Pass just outside of Summit County, Mendez said. The crash involved a Chevy Suburban and a Dodge vehicle, she said.

There were three minors in the Suburban, two of whom had minor injuries and one of whom complained of an injury, Mendez said. She said a driver involved in the crash was cited but could not immediately say which driver was cited or what kind of citation was issued.

The National Weather Service had issued a winter weather advisory warning that “travel could be very difficult” ahead of the storms that pummeled the I-70 corridor and mountain region amid the spring break season.

Summit Fire & EMS wrote in its Facebook post, “We are not out of winter yet, and as pavement warms up going into spring, any new snow will make them exceedingly slick. Slow down. Give other vehicles plenty of space. Drive predictably. Use your turn signals.”
