The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition is hosting an educational event on public charge at 2 p.m. at the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Silverthorne on Sunday.

Public charge is an element of immigration law that allows federal authorities to deny legal status to people who depend primarily on the government for their subsistence. There is a proposal from the federal government to expand the scope of the public charge to include medical assistance and food assistance programs.

The event on Sunday will help to educate people about the rules of public charge, the proposed changes and how they could impact an immigrant’s request for changes in legal status.
