Colorado Wild off target on wildfire mitigation issues

No, Jeff Berman of Colorado Wild, you’re off target about wildfire issues.

Most of us up here in the High Country have cut away trees and bushes and created some sort of what we hope to be a defensible space – against a raging wildfire, probably not.

The idea of staring out a window at blackened sticks instead of green trees is very saddening to say the least. The word “backcountry” seems to apply to anything that has pine trees on it.

We are not talking about, as you put it, “battling disease and insects in the backcountry well away from homes.” Hell, man, the backcountry is right out our back door!

The patch cuts that were done years ago west of Breckenridge Ski Resort toward Farmer’s Korner are prime examples of good forest management.

Aspens are filling in like mad, and there is new pine growth everywhere. Both game and nongame animals utilize the open meadow areas and firefighting crews stand at least a chance of preventing wildfires from coming into residential areas because of the fire breaks these patch cuts provide.

It’s not just the areas around the towns that are at risk. Just watching the TV news last summer showed us just how much forest these massive fires eat up.

Buddy, I think you need to take a ride over Ute Pass Road, and in case you don’t know, the color of evergreens is green, not red. Trees there are dying en masse from pine beetle kill.
