Commedia del’arte brings the energy

DILLON – As part of Keystone’s Festa Italiana, the Lake Dillon Theatre company presents the teen theater production, “The Servant of Two Masters.”The Italian commedia del’arte will fit the weekend’s theme.”Basically it’s a highly energetic Italian piece,” director Josh Blanchard said. The plot revolves around the story of two lovers, with characters called “zanni characters” who push the flow of the play.”It’s a different sort of dialect,” said Celsea Novotny, a member of the play. “It’s very fast paced with many plot twists, and there’s not really a main group of characters.”One female character pretends to be a man. Throughout the play she searches for her lost lover and her dowry.”Rehearsing for the play takes a lot of energy and focus,” Novotny said. “You have to really concentrate on your own character.” The play, which involves 12 separate characters, resulted from the teen intensive workshop taught by Blanchard through the Lake Dillon Theatre company. Sessions involve work on voice, movement, character, improvisation and auditioning techniques. “Josh really helped me focus on developing a character,” Novotny said.Novotny has been involved with the Lake Dillon Theatre company for the past six years and plans to attend the University of Colorado in the fall to eventually pursue a career in theater direction.Blanchard said of the participants in the program, about half go on to pursue a career in theater.”The rest just do it for fun, but will always enjoy participating in theater,” Blanchard said.Austin Diaz can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 251, or at
