Container of Dreams
Only three more days before the container/preschool and urgent orphan care center that is being built in the Walmart parking lot in Frisco is sealed and shipped to South Africa. Local contractors and volunteers have done an incredible job in converting this 40-foot shipping container by installing a bathroom, kitchen and a medical/bunk bedroom. However, we are not done yet! This Saturday we are celebrating Christmas! From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. we are collecting “Christmas shoeboxes at the container facility!” A Christmas shoebox is a regular empty shoebox, or plastic container of the same size, filled with items from three categories: hygiene items (toothbrush, washcloth); practical items (crayons, pencils, etc.); and something fun (a Hot Wheels car or two). Select an age category up to age 12, the gender of the child you would like to receive your gift and place a suggested donation of $10 on top of your gifts to help cover the shipping costs. Do not seal your box, instead use a rubber band to hold the lid in place, if needed. Your cash donation or check made out to Cargo of Dreams will not only pay for the shipping but in this case help pay for transport of the entire 2,600-square-foot facility/container. The container will arrive in South Africa by early October. It will take another two months to complete the final floor plan just in time for Christmas. What better Christmas gift than to send the entire school the kids will be using and have it filled with Christmas gifts, too? For information please visit http://www.cargoofdreams.org, or call the Mars van der Colff at (949) 751-8333. If you drive by and see the container doors open please stop by and take a peek inside.

Host a foreign student
Hosting a foreign student can bring a whole new perspective to your family. Having someone from another country stay in your home can be a real eye-opener for kids and parents alike. Suddenly your “American-ness” is showing. The ordinary way you do things, the typical activities and rhythms of your day are revealed as not the only way or best way of doing something. The thought of hosting an international student might be intimidating at first. “What if he hears me yelling at the kids?” “What if she thinks we are total freaks?” But don’t fear! Students adapt quickly and won’t embarrass you or tell your family secrets. There is something about being a part of a family that instills that even in an apparent stranger. The beauty is that after a few weeks, that stranger suddenly becomes an integral part of your family. For information on hosting a student please contact Mary Elizabeth Johnson at (303) 709-2180 or visit http://www.edutrav.org

The July 20 event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $60/person and $600 for a table of 10.
