‘What’s Up with Our Forests?’

Join Colorado State University Extension and Friends of the Dillon Ranger District to explore the dynamic forests of Summit County. This 10-part “What’s Up With Our Forests?” workshop series takes place at different trailhead locations throughout the county, offering participants guided hikes focused on current forest issues. Topics include tree ID, historic perspectives, stakeholder interest, the wildland urban interface and community wildland fire issues. Hikes are free and all are welcome to attend on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. This week’s hike will meet at the North Ten Mile Creek Trailhead. Seminar on Adobe Photoshop Elements

This is our third in a series of seminars on the basics of Photoshop Elements to make your digital pictures better. This hands-on class will discuss “Layers,”a powerful Photoshop tool used to combine multiple images for a wide variety of unique effects. If you bring a laptop with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you can work along. EduKate expands its outreach

For the past eight months, Colorado-based EduKate has sold totes and iPhone cases, donating partial profits to Guatemala nonprofit Starfish One-by-One. This program affords indigenous girls the opportunity to go to school. It is shown that educated girls break the cycle of poverty. To date, EduKate has sponsored more than 200 girls. EduKate is expanding its reach. Proceeds will now also support girls’ education in Tanzania and Cambodia through AfricAid and Lotus Outreach, both of which empower girls and provide scholarships. 10th Mountain Roller Dolls offers funding

10th Mountain Roller Dolls offer an opportunity for charitable organization to receive event funds from Aug. 17th Roller Derby bout “Mountains vs. Peaks.” The 10th Mountain Roller Dolls are a recreational roller derby league, and 501(c)3, seeking WFTDA apprenticeship. Container of Dreams

Only three more days before the container/preschool and urgent orphan care center that is being built in the Walmart parking lot in Frisco is sealed and shipped to South Africa. Local contractors and volunteers have done an incredible job in converting this 40-foot shipping container by installing a bathroom, kitchen and a medical/bunk bedroom. However, we are not done yet! This Saturday we are celebrating Christmas! From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. we are collecting “Christmas shoeboxes at the container facility!” A Christmas shoebox is a regular empty shoebox, or plastic container of the same size, filled with items from three categories: hygiene items (toothbrush, washcloth); practical items (crayons, pencils, etc.); and something fun (a Hot Wheels car or two). Select an age category up to age 12, the gender of the child you would like to receive your gift and place a suggested donation of $10 on top of your gifts to help cover the shipping costs. Do not seal your box, instead use a rubber band to hold the lid in place, if needed. Your cash donation or check made out to Cargo of Dreams will not only pay for the shipping but in this case help pay for transport of the entire 2,600-square-foot facility/container. The container will arrive in South Africa by early October. It will take another two months to complete the final floor plan just in time for Christmas. Mad Science comes to the Summit County Library for Summer Reading Program Finale!

The Summit County Library is excited to present “Mad Science,” a very special event to help celebrate the end of this year’s Summer Reading Program. For more than 25 years, Mad Science programs have been combining education with entertainment, to reach more than 6.5 million children with hands-on science experiences. In this special “Fire and Ice” presentation, children will be amazed to see giant beach balls floating in the air, foggy dry ice storms and even a special Mad Science “burp” potion, while learning about chemical reactions, air pressure and the states of matter. The first stop for Mad Science will be at the South Branch Library, Breckenridge, at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 30. LAPS Canine 4K

The 23rd annual LAPS Canine 4K will be held in Frisco on Saturday, Aug. 3 with pet supply vendors galore, prizes for top finishers in the run/walk race and a silent auction with loads of items and gift certificates. The 2.5-mile course will loop around Frisco, starting and ending in front of the Frisco gazebo on Main Street. Wounded Warriors

Ten ATVs are needed for a day-long donation for Saturday, Aug. 10, for soldiers from Ft. Carson’s Wounded Warrior Transition Unit who will be spending the weekend in Breckenridge. ATV owners may drop the vehicles off for use by a solider or they may join the ride that is being planned. These soldiers enjoy meeting and recreating with local citizens. McCullough Gulch trail work

Friends of the Dillon Ranger District will conduct extensive trail reconstruction on the McCullough Gulch trail, south of Breckenridge. Trail Construction will take place Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July 15 to Aug. 16. Hikers are highly encouraged to use alternate trails during this time or to return on the weekends. The trail will be impassable for much of the day, including access to White Falls loop hike. Hikers will be asked to wait up to 30 minutes, each way, to allow volunteers to work safely on the trail. John Denver ‘The Tribute’ Concert

Photography workshop to benefit Domus Pacis

Nationally renowned nature photographer John Fielder will host an all-day photography workshop on Saturday, Aug. 3 at his home in Silverthorne. The event will include personal instruction in nature landscape photography and technique, as well as dinner prepared by Doug Schwartz, chef at the CMC Culinary School. CMC Summer Technology Institute accepting applications

The CMC Summer Technology Institute has a few openings for the summer 2013 Institute, running July 22-26. The Institute is a week-long, technology-packed learning adventure for students who will be entering the sixth, seventh or eighth grades this September. Support Black Forest fire victims

In support of the hundreds of victims of the devastating Black Forest fire, Alpine Bank will host a food drive to collect donations for their benefit. Contributions can be dropped off at any Summit County Alpine Bank location through July 10. Items needed include: water, sports drinks, canned and boxed meals, soup, cereal, peanut butter, snacks and canned fruits and vegetables. After July 10, collected donations will be delivered to the Salvation Army and the Care and Share food bank in Colorado Springs for distribution to fire victims.

NRO dinner and dance

The Breckenridge-based National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) announces Western dinner and dancing in a special event called “Dancing on the Peaks.” Dance the night away with the NRO at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Breckenridge. The July 20 event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $60/person and $600 for a table of 10. This is the fourth year that the NRO has presented “Dancing on the Peaks,” which promises to be a rip-roaring good time. There will be a buffet and open bar, as well as a dance floor and dance lessons. NRO musicians will serenade the audience with Big Band-era favorites. Volunteers needed for bike race

Volunteers are needed for the Firecracker 50 Mountain Bike Race. Be a part of Summit County’s premier mountain bike event! The 12th annual Firecracker 50 will again be held on July 4, kicking off the town of Breckenridge parade on Main Street. The race will feature 750 riders and teams competing over two 25-mile laps in and around Breckenridge. Volunteers are needed in the evenings of the three days leading up to the race; throughout the day on July 4; and for teardown/cleanup on the 5th. We’ll need help preparing and staffing the on-course aid stations, general set up, rider registration, finish line timing and post-race cleanup. We will again be striving to make the race a zero-waste event, so volunteers will also be needed to handle the recycling/compost stations at Carter Park on race day. All volunteers will receive an event t-shirt and bike socks, and food and drinks are provided for most shifts. This is an excellent, fun opportunity to get involved with an outstanding local event, and Summit school students can earn volunteer hours for next year! Electronics recycling event

The 6th annual Community Electronics Recycling Event will be held at Summit High School Friday, August 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Metech Recycling, a certified e-Stewards recycler, will bring a truck to haul old electronics away. Just drive up to the truck parked in front of the school and a crew will unload it. Prices range from $2 to $15, depending on the size of the electronic device being recycled. Last year we recycled everything from broken cell phones to huge, rear-projector televisions! (We don’t recycle refrigerators.) We can accept cash, checks or credit cards. Over 95 percent of all materials will be fully recycled for re-manufacture. No recycled materials will be incinerated, land-filled or shipped abroad to be dumped. Summit County Preschool is now taking applications for before- and after-school child care for elementary-age children attending Frisco Elementary School for the 2013-14 school year. Before-school hours start at 7:30 a.m., and the students are taken to the bus stop for transportation to school. After-school students are transported from the school to a bus stop near the preschool where they are picked up and care is provided until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $20 for Mondays and $15 a day Tuesday through Friday.

Bethany Hughes of FIRC, has started a series of six snack-time lessons and activities for the 4-year-olds’ class at Summit County Preschool. The children learn about new foods, and the lessons are designed to help them start making healthy food choices at an early age. Mentor group needs volunteers

Summit County Mountain Mentors is a community-based mentoring program that matches caring adult volunteers with youths ages 8-16. Their mission is “to positively influence the youth of Summit County to lead healthy lifestyles through a consistent one-on-one relationship with an adult.” The group is looking for volunteers to spend eight hours each month with one of the 48 youths waiting for a mentor. Open Arms summer program

Open Arms Childcare and Preschool has openings for infants and preschoolers for our upcoming summer program. We are Christ-centered and provide learning opportunities for infant-through-preschool-aged children. Our Vacation Bible School program is taking place July 29 through August 2 from 9-11:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to visit our center, located at Christ Lutheran Church, 16072 Hwy. 9, Farmers Korner. Support our deployed troops

Whether you like it or not, they’re still there. Where? Afghanistan. Who are they? People, the sons and relatives of Summit County residents, who are serving our nation in our all volunteer military. They live under poor conditions, especially if they are serving in FOBs, Forward Operating Bases. They love receiving our packages filled with goodies and necessities, which although addressed to one soldier, are shared with their buddies. We need your support in brightening the days of these brave young people. Get involved with Friends of the Dillon Ranger District

Friends of the Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) is getting ready to kick off the 2013 volunteer season. FDRD works in partnership with the Dillon Ranger District to inspire stewardship of our local White River National Forest. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are currently looking for committed and passionate volunteers to join the Forest Stewards Program in any one of the following initiatives:

Ranger Patroller — Hike your favorite trails in a Forest Service volunteer uniform to educate trail users. (Applications due by May 17: Training date scheduled for June 1.)

Crew Leader — Gain new skills and lead groups during trail and service projects. (Applications due by May 17: Training date scheduled for June 22.)
