Construction worker dies in fall from Keystone roof

Jane Reuter

KEYSTONE – A 25-year-old construction worker died Wednesday afternoon in a 30-foot-plus fall from the top of a Keystone house.

The man’s name was not released Wednesday, pending the completion of a coroner’s investigation and notification of his nearest relatives.

The worker suffered a head injury in the fall and was incoherent and in extreme pain when firefighters arrived, said Snake River Fire spokesman David Williams.

Williams said the man was working at the peak of the roof when he fell.

“We know he fell 6 feet and hit another roof that was sticking out, and then from there fell about 20 feet to the ground,” he said. “(The ground) was a rocky surface, with construction debris strewn about.”

Firefighters arrived about 2 p.m., and Williams said the man was in route to Keystone Medical Center within 10 minutes of their arrival.

“With that kind of trauma, we consider that kind of patient a load-and-go,” he said. “We don’t mess around on scene. We get them C-collared and back-boarded, on the ambulance and to the clinic. We try for no more than 10 minutes on scene because that’s the critical time to get the patient to the closest medical center.”

The man was pronounced dead about 3 p.m.

The house, under construction at 410 Elk Cir., is on Keystone’s River Golf Course.
