Cook-Off slated for Mountain Community Fair

Daily staff report

SILVERTHORNE – The community fair’s entertainment tent will be full of spicy smells from 5:30 to 7 Friday evening when the Mountain Community Fair once again stages the popular Chili Cook-Off. The fair itself is a crowd pleaser, but the Cook-Off packs in cooks (professional and amateur) and tasters for a couple of hours of “down-and-out” chili competition.

Sponsored by City Market, the contest includes categories for: Professional and Non-Professional Red, Professional and Non-Professional Green and Vegetarian. An entry fee for professionals is $15, with a cash prize of $125 for first place and a local merchant prize for second place.

There is no fee for non-professionals and first- and second-place winners will receive generous local merchant prizes. All contestants must bring two gallons of pre-cooked hot chili, crock pot and ladle, a 6-foot extension cord, table decorations and signs. The scrutinizing public will sample and judge this fun event. All proceeds benefit the Summit High School girls softball team.

Come by the entertainment tent hungry and ready to judge great chili at the Blue River Fairgrounds (below the dam) in Silverthorne. After dinner, enjoy a rip snortin’ NARC rodeo at 7 p.m.

For more information on the Chili Cook-Off, call Liz Hodson at (970) 468-5249, or the Mountain Community Fair office at (970) 513-8081. Mail-in entries are welcome with name, address, phone, chili category and fee, if necessary, to: MCF P.O. Box 2779, Silverthorne, CO 80498.
