Cooper needs to get his facts straight

Patrick McWilliams Assistant librarian, South BranchBreckenridge

Robert Cooper has engaged in a great deal of misinformation in his letter published on Oct. 4 concerning Summit County Libraries. I will deal with the most serious piece of misinformation first. He says in his letter: “We have a situation here where a man was masturbating in a public library … Children witnessed this and told the librarian, who did nothing. The kids called the police themselves. … The library staff here followed the ALA playbook and refused to give the police his name and address.” Mr. Cooper goes on at length about this incident that he says happened “here.” The incident did not occur in Summit County. It happened in Naperville, Ill., in June.Mr. Cooper’s wildly inappropriate use of this story implies the public libraries of Summit County are not safe for children and that we, the employees of the library, are careless of their safety. I deeply resent that implication. An apology is in order. As for the other pieces of misinformation in Mr. Cooper’s letter, Summit County libraries do, in fact, have two copies of Sean Hannity’s book “Deliver Us from Evil” in Breckenridge and another in the main library, in Frisco. We seldom have multiple copies of any book, limited as we are in our budget. But any book can be transferred from one of the county libraries to another in one or two days. We also have several books critical of the Bush administration that are currently on the bestseller lists, though Mr. Cooper claims no one ever heard of them. We have copies of most of those books.
