County obtains 118 more acres for open space

SUMMIT COUNTY – The county Open Space and Trails program this summer acquired a total of 118.93 acres of land it will set aside as open space or trade to the U.S. Forest Service for backcountry uses.

The acquisitions mean Summit County owns 9,541 acres of open space in its portfolio. All the purchases in the Upper Blue Valley were made in conjunction with the Town of Breckenridge.

July was the busiest month for land acquisitions, said Todd Robertson, Open Space and Trails director.

In the Snake River Basin, the county obtained 5.16 acres when it bought the Teller Mountain/Star of the West mining claim between Deer Creek and Webster Pass. In the Tenmile Basin, it purchased the 18.97-acre Peak One/Emma J. Lode Claim; 25.575 acres in the Middle Fork of the Swan and Quandary Peak claims and the 25.82-acre Mount Guyot Claims.

Donations this summer included Copper Mountain and Glacier Mountain Claims, a 10.24-acre parcel valued at $8,927, and the Peak 1 Claims/Cliff Claims, a 13.4-acre parcel valued at $12,100.

In August, the county and Breckenridge Open Space purchased a 21-lot, 19.77-acre parcel at the historic Parkville town site, for $250,000.

The county has acquired almost 10,000 acres – both in purchases and donations – since the open space fund was established in 1995, Robertson said. It has spent $6.82 million on property valued at $52.9 million.
