County workers work extremely hard

In response to Claudia VanBuren of Grand Island, Neb., (SDN, Sept. 29) I have a question. Have you ever worked for county government? I did, for 13 years, nine here in Summit County, and have an observation.

Out of every eight-hour day, about six are spent talking to disgruntled, belligerent members of the public. The other two are spent with those of you reading this, including Claudia, who have never spoken an unkind word to anyone.

The employees of all government entities are not robots. They work extremely hard and I have the utmost respect for them and the elected officials mentioned. I’m not sure if term limits work or not, but one shouldn’t automatically relate them to effective, considerate employees.

To hear that the clerk’s office employees were singing and laughing actually does my heart good. It’s certainly better than the alternative.
