SUMMIT COUNTY – Builders are making steady progress on the new $14 million fleet and transit maintenance facility near the County Commons.

“We had a few weather issues and some underground stuff … but we’re on track now,” said assistant county manager Scott Vargo. “The pre-cast concrete walls are going up pretty quickly.”

The new buildings should be completely done by next fall, replacing an aging facility that was in dire need of replacement.

A big chunk of the funding – $10.3 million – came from federal stimulus money, with the county paying for the rest. About 70 percent of the facility will be used by the Summit Stage, with the rest reserved for other Summit County vehicles.

Vargo said the county incorporated several sustainable energy features in the building, including a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic panel that will generate a small portion of the building’s energy needs.

A bigger panel could have produced more electricity, but a rebate program offered by Xcel has a 10 kilowatt cutoff for immediate reimbursement. Larger systems are paid back over a 20-year period.

Additionally, the new building features extensive daylighting, with a row of semi-opaque panels along the ridge of the roof to reduce the amount of electric lighting needed inside. Solar walls help create some heat for the building, and waste oil will be burned in a heating furnace.
