Crime Stoppers offers steals

SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit County Crime Stoppers will hold a benefit event Oct. 4, and the deals shoppers will be able to find will be criminal.

Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit, citizen-run group that pays up to $1,000 for information leading to solved crimes in Summit County, will hold a three-part fundraiser at the Senior and Community Center at the County Commons in Frisco. Doors will open at 9 a.m.

One part of the event will be a garage sale of items donated by county law enforcement agencies. Sale items will include lost and unclaimed or seized property such as skis and snowboards – and they’ll be cheap, organizers said.

The benefit will also include a silent auction featuring dinners for two, snowmobile tours, jewelry and ski passes.

The best items will be reserved for a live auction. Bidders will have a chance to take home cars, ATVs, snowmobiles or horse trailers, among other items. Frisco Marina and Osprey Adventures, for example, have donated eight boats to be auctioned.

“This is the exciting thing,” said Steve Layne, president of the Crime Stoppers board. “The major dealers in the county are getting involved. There’s going to be plenty of fun stuff.”

Proceeds from the event will help the organization fund rewards for anonymous information and operational costs such as maintaining the toll-free reporting line. Crime Stoppers also is organizing crime-prevention workshops for business owners. A seminar on preventing internal theft and shoplifting is scheduled for Tuesday at the Breckenridge Town Hall.

For more information on crime-prevention workshops or donating to the fundraising event, call Crime Stoppers at (970) 376-4149.

To report a crime, call the hotline at 1-866-453-STOP.
