Work to install a new bridge on Montezuma Road over the Snake River has been rescheduled for this Thursday and Friday, followed by roadway paving operations.
The new open-span bridge was originally scheduled for installation beginning this Wednesday, but the work had to be pushed back one day to complete site preparations. The new 70-foot, permanent bridge will be installed over the Snake River at the site of the June washout, restoring vehicle travel to Montezuma Road along its original alignment.
The bridge and abutments, totaling eight separate pieces, are en route to the site. Montezuma Road will be closed to through traffic while the bridge is installed because of the length of time that would be required to move and then reinstall the crane that will place the bridge pieces. Summit County will be making a determination about when traffic at the bridge site will be closed, but anticipated the construction site would be closed to vehicular travel from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. The bridge will open to one-lane traffic each night.
Although traffic will be restricted during installation, Summit Stage will operate shuttle services from the U.S. Forest Service parking area below the construction zone up to the temporary road for foot access across the river. A second Summit Stage shuttle will run between the town of Montezuma and the eastern side of the closure to provide all-day access for Montezuma residents.
Montezuma residents who would like vehicle access into other parts of the county are advised to park a vehicle near the campgrounds below the closure or to leave Montezuma prior to construction each morning.
Crews are now continuing site preparation, including excavation for abutments, channel cleanup and alignment. For the next several days, drivers can expect occasional road closures of 10 to 45 minutes to allow for the movement of equipment and materials.
Paving across the bridge and vicinity will take place after final bridge preparations are complete. Anticipated Montezuma Road closures for paving operations will be limited in number and short in duration.
Following paving operations, the entire road will be opened to regular traffic across the new bridge, and Summit County Road and Bridge crews will begin deconstructing the temporary bridge and vegetating disturbed areas.
Because of the construction activities, Summit County encourages residents and visitors, including cyclists, to recreate in other areas in order to reduce traffic congestion and delays. To receive road information by text message or email, sign up for Summit County Alert at http://www.scalert.org.
