Crowder: Where’s the big-box discussion?

Trudy Crowder
Silverthorne

SDN’s well-intentioned interviews of the candidates for Silverthorne Town Council seem to be ignoring an issue that could become conflict of interest for some of those running. Namely, if elected, what approach will each take in considering Lowe’s’ application for a building permit? Clearly this issue will be on the plates of the council members almost immediately after taking office. Assuming that none of these folks has a pre-conceived agenda regarding this issue could be considered naive. Voters should not ignore the fact that several of the candidates are having their campaigns funded by an organization whose clear priority is to prevent Lowe’s and/or Home Depot from opening a store in this county. One can only hope that voters in Silverthorne will demand that their elected officials approach the decisions they make with impartiality and the best interests of all the town’s (and county’s) citizens.

Editor’s Note: The Silverthorne town attorney has informed all council candidates that the

Home Depot and Lowe’s site plan applications and the Angler Mountain project

application are all being processed now by the town, making these matters

“quasi-judicial.” The attorney has advised that, in the interest of due

process, candidates may not discuss the applications outside of formal

public hearings. The town attorney has also instructed candidates to avoid

any appearance of having prejudged the applications.
