Curtis Caughey: Irvine more experienced than Scanlan

Alex Miller’s opinion piece, “Another strange election year,” Oct. 15 again supports Christine Scanlan’s candidacy for the House Representative race over Debra Irvine, whom he refers to as “a political newbie with no record of her own to run on.” In fact, Ms. Irvine’s experiences are more vast than Ms. Scanlan’s before she was appointed to the Summit County School Board and appointed by the Democrats to the Colorado House to replace Representative Dan Gibbs when he was appointed to a Colorado Senate vacancy.

Looking back, shortly after Irvine announced her candidacy for the House and before he knew little about her, Miller pointed out her “political and leadership experience seems limited” and opined that “she will likely have tough go against the popular and tough Scanlan.” Since these attacks, the SDN has published four Scanlan reports (with photo) of her legislative accomplishments (love those bark beetles) and political ambitions. If I didn’t know better, I would suggest that Alex Miller is Scanlan’s campaign manager!

We need more candidates like Debra Irvine who will be a fiscally responsible, common sense legislator. Ms Irvine will not behave like Ms. Scanlan, who voted for over 20 measures in the last legislative session for increases in taxes that hurt Colorado small businesses and will likely be passed on to the already beleaguered Colorado taxpayers. Enough already, Mr. Miller; let the voters decide for themselves. We certainly know your political views.
